TX Attorney General heads to Supreme Court

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - Attorney General Greg Abbott is taking his fight to block the redistricting maps all the way to the US Supreme Court.

Since Monday is the first day candidates can file for the 2012 elections, Abbott is stressing the need for a quick decision, saying elections shouldn't be based on legally flawed maps.

The dispute is over whether there are enough minority dominated districts to reflect the state's growing minority population.

90% of the population growth in Texas over the past decade came from minorities, but only one of the four new Congressional districts was designed to elect minority candidates, who are typically Democrats.
