In an instant a fire can start and take a life, it can cost a family thousands of dollars in damages, it can even displace them. 

According to the National Fire Protection Association half of all home heating fires will happen in December, January and February.

So, if you have a space heater in your child's room or your baby's nursery this story is for you.

In this edition of KidSafe, the dangers of space heaters.

In 2009 an Amarillo home was heavily damaged after fire officials say a heater was left unattended. There were no injuries, but the damages reached in the upwards of 30-thousand dollars.

That was a financial hit. It was nothing compared to what happened in January at a Huntsville, Alabama home when a three-year-old girl was killed in a home fire that was blamed on an old space heater.

Fire officials will tell you not to leave space heaters unattended, but another part of keeping your family safe is to make sure you don't have a space heater that has been recalled.

In December of 2010, Walmart recalled 2.2 million Flo Pro, Airtech, Aloha Breeze and Comfort Essentials 1500 watt heaters. According to the CPSC web site you should stop using it immediately and return it for a refund to a Walmart store.

The True Living Heater Fans and Portable Quarts Radiant Heaters are said to burst into flames, 92-thousand were recalled.  They were sold exclusively at Dollar General Stores.
