ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An Albuquerque police officer is in surgery after authorities say a driver under the influence of alcohol dragged the officer and ran over his right leg.
Police said officer Justin Montgomery was injured Sunday following a stop of 37-year-old motorist Benito Aragon.
According to police, Montgomery and another officer were patrolling on bikes when they approached Aragon. Montgomery said he smelled alcohol in Aragon's car and Aragon accelerated quickly, dragging Montgomery.
Police were later able to stop Aragon who they said was under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with great bodily harm by vehicle and aggravated eluding.
Montgomery sustained an open fracture to his right leg and was transported to UNM Hospital.
It was unclear if Aragon had an attorney.
