SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico Secretary of State Dianna Duran says her car was 1 of several that struck a man's body on a highway near Santa Fe after the pedestrian was hit and killed a short time earlier by another vehicle.

Duran issued a statement saying she was "shocked and saddened" over the accident and expressed her "thoughts and prayers" to the family of the victim.

Santa Fe police say the man was killed while walking along New Mexico Route 599 Thursday night. Several other vehicles then struck the body while it was in the road.

Duran says she was on her way home about 7:30 p.m. when she ran over what "appeared to be an animal that had been struck" in one lane of the highway.

The man's name wasn't released.
