AMARILLO, Texas - The High Plains Food Bank is trying to fill around 3,000 requests for turkeys this Thanksgiving.
It's Communications Director, Broc Carter, says getting turkeys this year has been a struggle for the food bank and things like turkey recalls and a struggling economy are not making it easier.
"All of those things are coming together to make this perfect storm of us not being able to get turkeys this year," Carter said.
That's why the food bank is asking for the community's help and why the Amarillo Downtown Lions Club is responding to the call.
"This is a gap that we saw that we could really help with," Amarillo Downtown Lions Club Member Becky Weeks said. "So that we could buy as many turkeys as possible, so that we could stretch it as far as possible."
The food bank hopes it can keep stretching that generosity by encouraging people to drop off a turkey or donate money. For the food bank, every little bit helps.
"You can drop a check by and just designate that you want that to go to turkeys and then you can also donate online at hpfb.org/donate," Carter said.
When it comes down to it, "Turkey Day" just isn't the same without the turkey. Weeks says she hopes the donations will give hundreds of families a big Thanksgiving dinner.
