"Hay Hotline" to help shortage

Amarillo, TX - Relief is on the way for farmers and ranchers who have been affected by this year's extensive drought.

In hopes of meeting the increasing need for hay, the Texas Department of Agriculture is operating a "Hay Hotline."

This year's record breaking temperatures and little rainfall have virtually eliminated all hay supply in the state of Texas.

The hotline connects consumers with producers who have hay available.

"It's a really good resource in terms of trying to find and locate hay that's available," J.D. Ragland of the Randall County Extension Center said. "Those producers that have it available, their information is on the web site and someone that's interested in purchasing hay actually has to call that individual and negotiate the price and volume that you want to purchase and etc."

However, most producers who have hay are out of state.

Even agriculture supply stores are struggling to find hay and say they literally buy anything they can find.

"We've even told our customers if you come across some you know is a good buy you buy it," Tammy Robinson of Robinson's Feed Store said. "Now's the time to buy because with the shortage now there won't be hay this winter. So it's been very difficult."
