SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry touted his record of appointing Hispanics at a convention of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.

He said he took pride in appointing the first Hispanic women to serve as secretary of state and to both of the state's highest courts.

The non-partisan group opened its convention in San Antonio on Thursday. The organization released a study predicting that 12.2 million Latinos will cast a ballot in the 2012 presidential election, representing a 26% increase from 2008.

Perry is considering a run for president. But he received a tepid reception Thursday following speeches by Democratic Hispanic leaders. They denounced some of Perry's most prized policies as openly hostile to Hispanics. Among those issues is a requirement for tougher enforcement of immigration laws.
