Drought-tolerant cotton in the works

West Texas - As West Texas farmers face one of the state's most-severe droughts, researchers are experimenting with cotton seeds that would one day be able to thrive in the area's dry soil.

U.S. seed giant Monsanto Company and Bayer CropScience are planning to showcase these drought-tolerant seeds in about a decade.

In the meantime, the companies are working with cross-breeding and genetic modification.

They say West Texas is an ideal place to market these seeds since the land has naturally dry soil and is at high risk for drought.
