HOUSTON (AP) - Justin Verlander remained perfect with the Houston Astros, pitching seven shutout innings when they needed him most, and Jose Altuve homered and drove in three runs during a 7-1 victory over the New York Yankees that extended the AL Championship Series to a decisive Game 7. Acquired in an Aug. 31 trade, Verlander has won all nine of his outings for the Astros. And with his new club facing playoff elimination in Game 6 against the Yankees, he delivered again.

HOUSTON (AP) - The New York Yankees will have to win one more elimination game to get to their first World Series since 2009. This time, the Baby Bombers are going to a Game 7. They missed a chance to close out the AL Championship Series against the Houston Astros, losing 7-1 in Game 6. The Yankees had won all three ALCS games in the Bronx. They have won all four games this season when facing elimination, in the wild-card game and then after losing the first two games in the best-of-five AL Division Series.

DALLAS (AP) - Dallas Mavericks rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. missed Friday's game against the Sacramento Kings with swelling in his left knee. Smith was the ninth pick in the NBA draft out of North Carolina State.

HOUSTON (AP) - Yuli Gurriel is savoring his place with the Houston Astros as they chase their second trip to the World Series. Still, there's a part of him that yearns for the country he left behind for his shot in the majors as a 30-something rookie. The son of a Cuban baseball star, Gurriel's roots to his home country run deep. For boys in many countries, playing in a World Series is a lifelong dream. That wasn't the case for Gurriel growing up.

DALLAS (AP) - Dallas Mavericks guard Devin Harris has been granted a leave of absence after his brother was killed in a car crash. A Dallas police statement said 38-year-old Bruce Harris died Thursday afternoon from injuries suffered in a crash. Police say Harris and another man were in a disabled vehicle when a car driven by a 23-year-old man slammed into it from behind. Devin Harris didn't practice on Thursday and wasn't with the team on Friday.
