SHERMAN, CO. - A father of three is murdered in Sherman county. Nearly 16 years later,  police have yet to arrest anyone in connection with the killing.

In a farmer's field just north of the Sherman County line is where, 33 year old Mike Valdez was found shot to death in October of 1995.

"The first shot was above his hip, he ran towards the shooter, and they laced him up through the body." said Sherman County Sheriff Jack Haile

According to Haile, Valdez was shot nine times with a nine millimeter.

"It was obvious he was shot somewhere else and then his body was dumped out there." said Haile.

Haile tells NewsChannel 10, Valdez was dumped near his pick up... the only other item around, was a clip which held the bullets used to kill him.  Valdez was the owner of the La Cabana Bar in Cactus and it is believed his murder may have had a connection to his business. Over the past 15 years, the sheriff has conducted dozens of interviews but has never been able make an arrest in the killing of Mike Valdez.

"Somebody is going to have to tell us something, because the pick and the cartridge case is the only physical evidence we have." said Haile.

We spoke with Valdez' sister. In our conversation about her younger brother, her eyes were filled with tears. She says if an arrest was made in his murder. justice would come to her brother and her family.

"He didn't deserve to die, nobody deserves to be killed like that, I want to see his murderer punished." said Haile.

Sheriff Haile stresses since an arrest has not been made, the killer could still be on the streets in the Panhandle.

If you know anything about Mike Valdez' murder, you are urged to call the Sherman County Sheriff's office at 806-366-5551.
