Relief for the fire victims

Potter County, TX- Nine families are homeless following a wildfire that started Sunday evening near 9th Street and Soncy.

The dust and soot blowing in the air is causing some low visibility, but officials say the fire is completely contained at this time but they are still monitoring the area for hot spots.

According to the Red Cross nine homes were destroyed by the fire and multiple outbuildings are considered damaged or destroyed.

The Red Cross has done a damage assessment and are now working to get some relief for the fire victims.

"The panhandle is very giving and most people stay with their folks and relatives but if they need a place to stay, food, clothing, those essential things that we take for granted everyday, those are the things that we want to help those folks with and then of course the long term if they need rent help and that kind of thing," says Jana Gregory.

They say at this time there is no need for community members to bring supplies to them, but monetary donations are welcome.

Those wanting to help fire victims can volunteer with the Red Cross.

Construction is underway on Canyon's new aquatic park, which is still on schedule to open to the public on June 1st. The aquatic park is just a bunch of holes in the ground right now. But when the slides go up (by April 10th), people will start to see how close the project is to completion.
