Amarillo, TX - A wildfire near Western and Hester is under investigation.
The fire sparked around 2pm, Wednesday afternoon near the Western St. exit off the 335 loop headed eastbound. It quickly spread southeast towards the City of Amarillo, partly due to wind gusts of about 45 miles per hour. Residents in Northwest Amarillo were authorized to evacuate. Those in the La Paloma subdivision, Fairways subdivision and Tascosa Country Club were able to return to their homes.Residents in the areas of Hester Road and Walnut Hills remain evacuated.
According to the Amarillo Fire Department, firefighters from station 11 were the first on scene. Station 11 opened within the past year. Fire officials say, if that fire station had not opened the damage would have been much worse. That damage includes 60 acres burned. One mobile and a storage building have been destroyed. No injuries have been reported.
The receiving point for evacuees is the Boy Scout Council Office, located on 401 Tascosa Rd., and also at the Church on Quail Creek, located on 801 S. Tascosa Rd.
