Vampire appliances sucking the life out of your energy bill

Amarillo, Texas - Sleeping red-eyed thieves may be stealing your energy. It seems like the price of everything is going up these days... And many of us are looking for ways to lower our bills.

Your electric bill is one of the easiest places to start.

It may be hard to believe, but a lot of your energy use happens when you're not even using your high-tech gadgets.

They're called vampire appliances... And they could be sucking the life out of your energy bill.

Xcel Energy's Wes Reeves says, "Between ten and twenty percent of your electric costs are these vampire users, especially if you have a lot of electronics in your home. So if you cut that down the middle and said I'm going to save 15 percent, you could save about $160 a year. That's almost like skipping a month or a month and a half of your electric bill."

The simple solution is to plug several appliances into a power strip that you switch off every night before you go to bed.

Also, your computer's screen saver sucks energy, so set it to go to sleep mode and save around $20 a year for every computer in your house.
