Texas to require gas drillers to disclose chemicals

NewsChannel 10

Texas - Texas is poised to become the first state to require gas drillers to disclose the chemicals they use to release natural gas from tight rock formations.

Approved Thursday by the House and taken up by the Senate, the bill has widespread support among both Republicans and Democrats.

Governor Rick Perry is expected to sign it.

Hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking", lets drillers penetrate tight rock formations by pressure pumping chemical-laced water into the ground and allows oil and gas to flow out.

Some environmental groups and landowners fear fracking is causing water contamination but the industry insists it's safe.
