Too many unnecessary colonoscopies

NewsChannel 10

Medicare patients may be getting more colonoscopies than necessary.

Researchers at the University of Texas found nearly 1/4 of patients with an average risk received a follow-up colonoscopy years earlier than they should have.

The study's authors say the early repeat tests should be reserved only for people at higher risk of colon cancer.

They add that the results suggest Medicare regulation is not working.
