Amarillo, Texas - When it comes to watering your lawn... There can definitely be too much of a good thing. A few simple landscaping changes can keep your yard green... And save you some money.
It's easy to think because it's so dry, the sprinklers need to stay on longer, but that's actually a big waste... Your grass can only absorb so much... The extra just goes down the drain, taking your money with it. Save water and money by making sure you use just one inch of water on your lawn.
Coulter Garden's Warren Reid says, "Monitor your sprinklers. Set some coffee cups out, measuring cups. Run it for 20 or 30 minutes and see how much water your actually getting. You may be surprised. Station one may be 20 minutes to get an inch. Station seven may be 45 minutes. Because every head is different and every station is different."
You might also want to consider letting your grass get taller... Not an overgrown lawn, of course, but a little goes a long way.
The taller the grass, the more it shades itself, preventing water from evaporating... And reducing your water bill.
