Distracted driving continues to be a dangerous problem on American roadways...

Now, the nation's top transportation official is waging war on distracted drivers with a dramatic web campaign.

The new campaign features tragic stories of victims and how their lives have been changed because of distracted drivers.

U.S. officials say distracted driving killed more than 5,400 people in 2009.

And texting behind the wheel makes drivers 23 times more likely to have an accident.

"There is no phone call there is no text message that can't wait until you get to your destination. There isn't," says Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Transportation officials hope the new campaign will help people realize how dangerous distracted driving can be.

Cell phone companies are also exploring ways to keep drivers off their phones with new apps that allow drivers to hear text messages when they are received.
