Amarillo, Texas - The High Plains Food Bank kicked off planting season 2011 on Saturday... With the help of dozens of volunteers.
Those who came out had the chance to plant a bountiful garden provided by the food bank's brand new greenhouse. The Food Bank's Zack Wilson says, "For the community, not only does this help get fresh produce back into the mix.
Two million pounds of the total seven million that we distributed last year was produce. So we are very excited about not only that, but getting the community involved."
Of those two-million pounds of produce given to our area's hungry families... Twenty thousand pounds were grown right there in the food bank's garden.
The garden was started back in 2009... And it's growing every year... Expanding the produce options and the size of the planting area.
