Criminals cashing in on Bin Laden death

Posted: Updated:

AMARILLO, TEXAS - While most of us spent Monday rejoicing the death of the world's most wanted terrorist, criminals got busy trying to figure out how to capitalize on the event.

The hackers are playing off the public's interest by providing false links to supposed leaked pictures and videos of the body. Clicking on them, might download programs allowing the criminals to take over part of your computer to do what they want.

"Sending out spam is illegal, so they use your computer to send it out rather than get caught," Scott Erwin of Scott's Custom Computers said.

This type of crime happens just about every time there's a big news event.

"The last big thing was the Paris Hilton video. That was all over the Internet," Erwin said.

The best thing to do is make sure your anti-virus software has all the latest updates. But if you don't have that:

"The most important thing to remember is to get your news from a reliable source rather than from spam and facebook. Go to the news sites, from out from the source what the real news is," Erwin said.
