Kids Inc. pulls out of controversial plan

AMARILLO, TEXAS - Kids Inc. no longer wants to be part of a deal with Amarillo to build a recreation facility downtown.

The organization's executive director made that statement at Tuesday's city commission meeting.  He said they are not a political organization and do not want to become a campaign issue.

After the city approved spending $6 million on the project, a petition started circulating to force the issue on a November ballot. That prompted some nasty statements about Kids Inc.

"Unfortunately, an organization who has seeked to serve children for 66 years has turned into what I would classify as a political pawn by several groups and others who seek to serve on this commission," Jimmy Lackey said.

The City, Kids Inc. and even the people who started the petition all said they would be happy to consider this construction again at a later time with different circumstances.
