Texas man charged after son's body found in box

HOUSTON (AP) — A man makes his first court appearance in Houston on Tuesday after he was charged in the death of his disabled 10-year-old son whose decomposing body was found in a cardboard box.

Jeffrey Singer is free on $50,000 bond after he was charged with serious bodily injury to a child.

He was charged after the body of his son Jonathan, who had cerebral palsy, was discovered in the family's vehicle over the weekend in a Houston suburb. It's unclear how or when the boy died.

Records show that Jonathan's family had twice been investigated by Texas social workers, though no abuse was found in the first case and the second claim couldn't be fully investigated.

Singer's attorney says his 45-year-old client, who's unemployed, did nothing to hurt his child.
