Safety measures taking place for children in North Amarillo

AMARILLO, TX - Safety measures are being implemented around Hamlet Elementary School and Park.

The City of Amarillo just paid about $2,500 to install a new fence near the newly remodeled basketball court at Hamlet Park. The hope is the fence will stop basketballs from going into the busy street and kids won't chase them into traffic. hamlet residents tell us, the fence serves another purpose. According to residents, people who they believe were involved in suspicious activity would just sit along a concrete slab. Now with the fence there, there is no place for them to sit, so those people and possible suspicious activity have gone else where.

There are other possible security measures in the works. The city's Department of Parks and Recreation is proposing a nearly $83,000 project to install about four security cameras and twenty lights around the perimeter of the park.  The hope is the new security measures will help cease some criminal activity, like the shooting that happened last month.

"When its next to a school or a school park, that's to me when its more of an issue. Our children need to be protected." said James Allen, Chair of the city's Community Development Advisory Committee.

The Community Development Advisory Committee will vote to approve the funding for the project later this month.

If passed, it will head to the City Commission. If you would like to attend the meeting and voice your opinion, the meeting takes place Thursday, April, 28th at the Downtown Library. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.
