HOUSTON (AP) — A mental examination can be expected on Houston twins charged with murder after police found them living with their mother's bug-infested corpse.
Police arrested Edward and Edwin Berndt on Monday after they found their mother face down in the hallway of their home.
Attorney Robert Scardino told the Houston Chronicle the 48-year-old twins are scared. He says it is unclear if they are aware of their situation. He says a mental evaluation will be done.
Police say the twins told them their mother fell on Jan. 10 and died three days later. Court documents say the Berndts did not provide medical attention to their 89-year-old mother, Sybil Berndt, or give her food and water after she fell. They say they didn't have money for doctors or to bury her.
