AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - AMARILLO, TEXAS - About one in four homeless people in the country are veterans. It's a problem NewsChannel 10 has been tracking for years. But now a new local push is already showing some strong results.
The program starts with new HUD housing grants set aside just for veterans. And it combines that with several programs aimed at giving coping tools. That means monthly group therapy, weekly checks by team members and daily encouragement from VA staff on everything about job training to how to stay off drugs and out of prison.
It's part of a plan started under President Clinton, but not fully funded until this year's $800 million commitment nationwide. If you know someone who needs help through the new program, the best way to get it to them is by calling 1-877-4AID-VET.
