Amarillo, TX - If you own a trailer your chance of becoming a victim of theft is increasing.

In the last few days the Potter County Sheriff's office has had three trailers reported stolen.

Trailers of every kind are stolen from residential and business areas throughout the year.

These thefts are often times some of the most difficult for investigators to track.

"Some of the older trailers, they don't have the vin on them, so they are real easy to steal and then go down and just register it as somebody else and say well it's a home owned trailer, give them you know documentation on it, when you bought it that kind of stuff and boom you got, your licensed in your name," says Sheriff Thomas.

To prevent becoming a victim, Sheriff Thomas says, it is best to keep trailers behind locked gates, put a sturdy lock on the equipment, and make sure it's in an area where you can keep an eye on it.
