AMARILLO, TX - Across the Panhandle and around the world, millions are forced to walk around with out a good pair of shoes. Some local residents have joined a global fight to change that.

Students at Ascension Academy in southwest Amarillo went part of the day without shoes to experience what its like for millions of people around the world who are forced to go barefoot every day.

It was all part of the global "One Day Without Shoes" awareness campaign sponsored by Toms Shoes. The U.S. company provides shoes for needy children in third world countries.

"It's easy when you live in a place like Amarillo to assume things are not happening. So I wanted them to be aware, and then to realize its not just across the world, there are people right here who don't have shoes." said teacher Arlene Kasselman who organized the experience for the students.

According to The Salvation Army, shoes are a great need for hundreds of area families. The organization gave more than 650 pairs of shoes to local school children at the start of the school year.

Administrators also tell NewsChannel 10, the majority of adults who turn to The Salvation Army for clothing help mainly ask for shoes, because their mode of transportation is walking and a good pair of shoes helps them get to where they need to go.
