LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — A West Texas man who licked the blood off a slain woman's rings before pawning them has been sentenced to life in prison.
A jury in Lubbock on Wednesday convicted 37-year-old Anthony Torres of capital murder.
Prosecutors did not seek the penalty so Torres gets an automatic life prison term over the June slaying of 27-year-old Amanda Moreno.
A coroner determined Moreno died of asphyxia and blunt force trauma. Police say Torres had lived with Moreno.
Investigators say Torres killed Moreno to rob her and get crack cocaine. Torres also told Lubbock police that he licked the blood off Moreno's rings, while stealing the jewelry, to avoid suspicion while pawning them.
Moreno's two daughters, who were 6 and 2, were unharmed when Torres took them along as he sought drugs
