ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) - Xcel Energy is offering discounts for more than 150,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs for New Mexico residential customers this year to help them use less electricity.
The utility says that in turn will reduce environmental impacts and the need to build more power plants.
Xcel Energy will offer special prices on CFL bulbs at participating retailers throughout the year.
Utility officials say customers not only will get a discount on the purchase, but they can expect to see it pay back in energy savings.
Xcel Energy is offering the break on CFLs that have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Star label.
Those use up to 75% less energy than typical incandescent light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer.
