AMARILLO, TX - Police are alerting residents to keep their items protected as investigators work to slow down a continuing streak of auto burglaries.

"The best thing to do is take your stuff with you.  It's a big hassle to have to carry your laptop every time or to make sure your purse is with you when you run into the store, but the fact is suspects are aware." said Sgt. Brent Barbee with the Amarillo Police Department.

According to Barbee,  since the start of the year, nearly 500 auto burglaries have been reported. A third of them were along the stretch of I-40 West between Bell and Soncy.

Police also suggest you mark your items with data dots, which is like way to mark your property.  In the event that you accidentally leave your belongings in the car and they get stolen, Amarillo Crime Stoppers would be able to identify the items if they are recovered through the data dots.
