Senate gives initial approval to Choose Life plate

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Senate has given initial approval for a "Choose Life" license plate as a measure to discourage abortion and raise money to promote adoption.

The bill by Dallas Republican John Carona would send money from the specialty plate sales into a "Choose Life" account. Carona says 24 states have raised about $14 million in similar programs.

The money would be used to help organizations assisting pregnant women considering adoption.

The bill is opposed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas. The ACLU says it turns license plates into forums to debate controversial topics and the state should not allow only one point of view.

The bill passed on a 21-10 vote and still needs a final vote, likely Wednesday, before heading to the House for consideration.
