Texas jobless rate holds steady as state adds jobs

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Workforce Commission says the state's unemployment rate held steady at 8.3 percent in January as more than 44,000 jobs were added.

Agency figures released Thursday show that the state added jobs for the fourth consecutive month while the jobless rate remained below the national rate of 9.0 percent.

Trade, transportation and utilities added 15,800 jobs in January, by the far the most of any sector. Education and health services added 7,600 jobs.

The commission says the state has added 253,900 jobs over the past year.

Commission Chairman Tom Pauken says employers are continuing to expand their work forces.
