NM agency discussing options for massive tire dump

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Land Commissioner Ray Powell says he's considering options for cleaning up a massive tire dump in northeastern New Mexico.

Powell's office has been busy reviewing records and charting a legal strategy since last week, when Albuquerque television station KRQE alerted the State Land Office to the thousands of tires lining an arroyo near Wagon Mound.

The tires stretch for about three-quarters of a mile on state trust land.

The tires have been dumped in the arroyo over the last few years by rancher and businessman Harold Daniels. He says the tires are part of an effort to control erosion.

The state Environment Department initially approved the project. The agency says Daniels abandoned the original plan and has been asked to stop bringing more tires to the site.
