NM man to serve life in prison in 2006 killing

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison in the shooting death of another man in eastern New Mexico in January 2006.

State District Judge Stephen Quinn sentenced Robert Macias on Wednesday in the death of 19-year-old Wilfred Salas Jr. in Clovis.

District Attorney Matthew Chandler says a Clovis jury found Macias guilty in January of first-degree murder and shooting at a motor vehicle resulting in great bodily harm.

Authorities say Macias had been involved in an altercation at a bar and later heard other people, including Salas, laughing about it.

Officials say Macias fired three gunshots at Salas' vehicle as the teen drove away, hitting Salas once in the head.
