AMARILLO, TX - Potter County had nearly double the amount of confirmed child abuse cases in 2010 than our state's average.

These new numbers were just released by local Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA.

According to casa administrators, 24 out of every 1000 children in Potter County were victims of confirmed child abuse. In Randall County, the pool was slightly lower with 17 out of every 1000.

Child abuse is down slightly from 2009, but advocates say, one child abused is one too many.

"If you suspect you neighbor is abusing a child, and you don't say anything, that is a criminal offense and you could be charged for that. Children are being abused more and more because people aren't calling in." said Amarillo Area CASA Executive Director, Barbara Richardson.

In 7 immediate Amarillo area counties, CASA reports more than 1,400children suffered from confirmed abuse and neglect last year. Those counties include Armstrong, Briscoe, Carson, Hutchinson, Potter, Randall and Swisher counties. Richardson stresses, that's just the confirmed cases, but there are countless children whose abuse and neglect go unreported.
