Austin, TX - Texas budget troubles are now affecting textbooks as the state says there is no money to buy new ones.

Lawmakers are dealing with a projected $15 billion shortfall and say the base school budget does not include money for updated textbooks.

There are 4.6 million students in Texas public schools, and officials say current science textbooks can be up to 12 years old.

The state education commissioner is seeking $520 million in updated instructional materials for the fall.
