Amarillo, Texas - One of the Panhandle's largest employers is announcing a hiring freeze. The Amarillo ISD Superintendent says it's happening because of the ongoing uncertainty about public school funding.

The freeze affects all positions supported by any funds other than competitive grants.... Initially impacting openings in the custodial, maintenance and grounds departments.

There is still no word on how much money Amarillo ISD will lose out on because of state budget cuts, so this is just a precautionary measure.

No layoffs or other reductions are expected... The district employs around 4,000 people... Half of them are teachers.
