Downtown developer controversy conclusion

AMARILLO, TEXAS - After months of controversy and debate, Amarillo's City Commission has finally selected a developer for downtown revitalization..

All along, Downtown Amarillo Incorporated wanted to hire the Wallace Bajjali Development Partners to oversee several key projects - like a convention center hotel.  But the Amarillo Independent newspaper reported previous projects from the developer have been foreclosed on and caused lawsuits in the past.  That news which launched an extended background check by the city which officially ended Tuesday.

Despite all the concern, commissioners voted to offer the company the job - launching a new phase for downtown redevelopment.

"I'm excited about this city moving forward. Not just with downtown, but it's going to strength our economy, it's going to bring jobs to Amarillo, and it will also help support the entire region surrounding Amarillo," Mayor Debra McCartt said.

This contract is not actually to build any of the project yet, it's just asking the developer to come up with possible design plans for the city commission to vote on in the near future.
