Texas mom pleads guilty to locking child in closet

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A South Texas mother has pleaded guilty to charges of locking away her 12-year-old daughter in a closet after school for about a year, only letting her out to use the restroom and eat.

Leticia Ines was sentenced to one year in prison but could be free in two weeks. State District Judge Leonel Alejenadro on Monday sentenced the 41-year-old mother to time served, meaning Ines could be released by March 1.

Ines pleaded guilty to one count of injury to a child. She was arrested last year after authorities say Ines confined her daughter in a closet inside the family's Brownsville home.

According to The Brownsville Herald, an attorney for Ines told the court the girl was locked up for her own protection because she had psychological issues.
