Amarillo's homeless down 24 percent

AMARILLO, TEXAS - Local leaders are claiming a huge success in tackling one of Amarillo's major social problems.

A new count done at all area shelters and the streets shows the city's homeless population is down almost 25 percent from last year or 119 people.

The homeless population in Amarillo is now the lowest it's been in five years. Compare today's 368 people to 426 at the start of the recession.

Those involved with Amarillo's coalition to end homelessness think a lot of the decrease has to do with the new homeless prevention and rapid re-housing program. Last year they served almost 1200 people who were homeless or on the brink of becoming homeless.
