National Donor Day calls for more organ donors

AMARILLO, TX - February 14th also marks National Donor Day and LifeGift, a not-for-profit organ procurement organization, is urging Texans to put their heart in the right place this Valentine's Day.

According to LifeGift everyday 18 people die waiting for an organ transplant. In the Texas panhandle alone, over 10,000 people are on the waiting list to receive an organ.

Although Texas recently reached the one million registered donors mark, LifeGift says they still do not have enough donors. According to a local donation specialist, Hispanics are one of the groups that's been most affected by the lack of available organs.

"Locally there's a tremendous need, Hispanic population for kidney donation is extremely high. I'd say of about 110,000 on the list probably about 70,000 of those are kidney recipients that are needing donations" said Mia Hunter, Donations Clinical Specialist, LifeGift.

In the Amarillo-Lubbock areas, out of 10,000 people on the waiting list, 8,000 are waiting for a kidney transplant.

If you'd like to become an organ or tissue donor visit or you can register when applying for or renewing your driver's license.
