AMARILLO, TX - Eastridge elementary was forced to shut down early Friday for its students safety.

Friday morning, Eastridge Elementary lost power, so nearly 730 kids were in the school building without heat, lights and plumbing.

Currently, the power is back on and the school was able to hold its extended day care program for the dozens of students who were not able to get home.

But earlier, there was just one working bathroom facility for much of the day.

The school called parents to have them come pick their students up.

Xcel Energy officials say the problem was sparked by an equipment issue underneath the school building. Crews worked for hours to restore power.
