American Airlines to recall 368 flight attendants

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - American Airlines says it will recall 368 flight attendants to deal with an expected increase in traffic during the summer.

The airline said Wednesday that recall notices would go out Monday to the most senior 147 attendants, with notices to the rest following in mid-March.

Airline spokeswoman Missy Latham said the company was able to recall the attendants largely because of recent agreements to work with foreign airlines in offering service on international routes including Los Angeles-Shanghai, New York-Budapest and Chicago-Helsinki.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants said the first group would return to work June 1 and is expected to be based at New York's LaGuardia Airport.

American, a unit of Fort Worth-based AMR Corp., had 14,906 active flight attendants and 1,104 inactive at the beginning of this month, Latham said.

Airlines typically furlough active employees when they reduce jobs, which gives the workers recall rights in case of future hiring.
