Amarillo, TX - Rolling black outs are happening all across Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico because of the increase in power usage.
Many areas are being hit with frigid temperatures, which may lead to rolling blackouts in our area, if consumers do not take precautions, according to Xcel Energy.
Wes Reeves of Xcel in Amarillo says there have been a few small outages in the area at this time, but we have avoided any serious outage because the transformers have not met their full capacity.
Reeves says to avoid causing a blackout, be considerate when turning up your thermostat.
"The best thing to do is, when you come in and your uncomfortable, be very careful about your thermostat. The tendency is to want to turn it up really high, which I've been guilty of doing as well. But try to inch it up a little bit, get your house gradually warmer as you need to and also put off some of your high energy chores until a little bit later," said Reeves.
Reeves says conserving energy during the frigid cold will avoid causing a blackout and also help you in the long run.
"Over the next 24 hours, it would be good just to try to be very mindful of conservation, not only will it help us meet the demand but also of course it lowers your electric bill and your gas bill, if you are a gas customer," added Reeves.
