Amarillo, TX - In order to cut down on child sexual abuse, hundreds of teachers, counselors and parents come together to learn how to recognize it.

One in three girls and one out of every six boys experience some form of sexual abuse before their 18th birthday according to Troy Timmons, a psychotherapist from Amarillo.

Timmons says 99% of the offenders in our area are someone who the victim's family knows, trusts and loves.

He says child sexual abuse is something many people get uncomfortable speaking about, but it is a valuable topic.

"We're trying to arm school counselors and the teaching professionals with information they can take back to their schools and try to help children that have been abused and to help prevent the abuse of children in the future," said Troy Timmons.

Timmons recently released a book called "Mommy, Please Read This" describing the many sides and signs of child sexual abuse.

Timmons hopes with an increase in awareness of child abuse there will also be an increase in help for the children.
