Dewhurst, other Texas leaders get more security

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is using state bodyguards on an as-needed basis after he says "credible threats" were documented in December.

Dewhurst on Thursday declined to provide details on the threats.

Gov. Rick Perry has a security detail. Dewhurst was seen this week, with plainclothes Texas Department of Public Safety officers, while in the Capitol and the Senate chamber.

The Austin American-Statesman reports Attorney General Greg Abbott and newly re-elected Texas House Speaker Joe Straus are also part of the expanded DPS security.

DPS declined comment.

Security for elected officials nationwide has drawn scrutiny since U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head during a public appearance last weekend in Tucson. Six people were killed and 14 wounded. A suspect remains in custody.
