CLARENDON, TEXAS - "That is a sight no mother should ever have to see in their life," Nancy Brown said.

The mother of Donley County's 4-year-old murder victim saw her son Chance in an Amarillo hospital right before he died. She says he was covered in bruises and already brain dead when she arrived.

"It looked like he had been tossed around like a rag doll and thrown under an 18-wheeler."

Chance was airlifted to the hospital after investigators say he was assaulted in this house near Lelia Lake on County Road W.  The Sheriff says his father, Robert Babcock, is behind bars on a $1.1 million bond facing charges of capital murder and domestic violence injury to a child.

"I would have never thought Robert would have done anything like this. Ever. Obviously I was very wrong," Brown said.

Child Protective Services says they took Chance away from his mother in November after finding evidence of neglect and abuse. She suggested he be placed with his father instead. CPS agreed after finding no major red flags in his criminal history or previous complaints to their agency.

Autopsy results on Chance are expected back sometime Friday afternoon.
