Residents invite airmen to Christmas dinner

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - A group of Clovis-area organizations is asking residents to invite a Cannon Air Force Base airman to Christmas dinner.

Clovis-Curry County Chamber of Commerce executive director Ernie Kos told the Clovis News Journal the response has been overwhelming since the project was announced Friday. Kos says last year, there were many single airmen alone over the holiday. She says for many of them, it was their first time to be away from home during the holidays.

Kos says about 24 or 25 families had already called by 5 p.m. Friday to offer a place at their table. She says most of those families had multiple spots open, and one family said it could host eight extra for their holiday feast.

The chamber will accept volunteers through Dec. 21.
