Udall Questions Helmet Safety Standards

New Mexico - New questions are being raised about the safety of football helmets.

New Mexico Senator, Tom Udall, is asking the Consumer Product Safety Commission to investigate whether current safety standards are good enough to protect players from concussions.

Current standards evaluate a helmet's ability to withstand a direct blow, but Udall says the standard doesn't account for whether the helmet adequately prevents concussions.

On top of that, he says, the standard doesn't distinguish between helmets used by younger players and those from bigger and stronger professional players.
