Football helmet safety standards are getting a closer look, thanks to New Mexico Senator Tom Udall.
Udall recently sent a letter to consumer product safety commission. The letter noted the fact that doctors say sports are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury, second to car wrecks, for people 15 to 24 years old.
Udall is concerned that the standard for football helmets does not distinguish between professional players and younger players. He has also raised concerns over school football teams possibly not replacing old and damaged helmets.
