Record-Setting Black Friday

Amarillo, Texas - The shoppers who braved the cold made for what many local retailers speculate is the most successful Black Friday they can ever remember.

138-million Americans will hit the malls this weekend... That's up from 134-million last year. Their purchases will account for nearly 10% of this year's holiday season shopping.

Westgate Mall says they've never seen a Black Friday this busy... And many store owners we spoke with say they expect to do triple the business they would on their busiest off-season day. As for why that's happening... Many attribute it to increased consumer confidence, along with more careful spending throughout the year.

Westgate Mall Manager Brian Giffin says, "they tend to save their cash and not put as much stuff on credit cards so they're feeling like hey we've made preparations for this. We're no longer gonna run up the charge cards, we're gonna come out here and we've prepared, we've got money set aside for Christmas and we're here to spend it."

The National Retail Federation says he's right on target... After sales plummeted in 2008 and rose slightly in 2009, the Federation predicts will increase by just over 2% to $447 billion.
